Justice and accountability for war related sexual violence in Sri Lanka

 

Due to both shame and fear linked to the local culture, Sri Lankan women victims of sexual violence during the civil war have been reluctant to speak out about it. The few times that women have come forward, the cases have not been properly investigated or were not concluded despite an indictment. 

 

After the war, UN Investigation into War Crimes in Sri Lanka, and a number of organizations recollected testimonies of sexual violence and rape from victims that had mostly already fled the country. However, although Sri Lanka is currently undergoing a transitional justice process, it will probably be difficult for these women to be part of the process.
